As a leading hub for educational research, the Learning Lab of University Duisburg-Essen explores the frontier of digital technology and Artificial Intelligence in education. We drive digital innovation by spearheading collaborative projects that bridge the gap between academic research and educational practice. Highly visible and frequently cited, our contributions actively shape the national and international EdTech landscape.

We explore how emerging technologies can transform learning experiences and enhance education. Our research focuses on the following key areas:

- Extended Reality: We investigate the potential of extended realities (AR/VR) to create engaging and effective learning experiences. This includes exploring the pedagogical applications of AR/VR, designing immersive learning environments, and evaluating their impact on student learning and motivation. We cooperate with partners in the various educational sectors and follow the rationale of design-based research approaches.

- AI: We analyse Articial Intelligence as a tool for learners to regulate learning ("learning analytics")  as well as a tool for teachers to design learning materials and courses ("educational analytics").

- Adults: Our focus is on adult learning and how digital innovations can be successfully used and implemented in adult, further and vocational education. We thrive to understand the implications of digital technology and AI for competence development and future learning from the perspective of lifelong learning.

- Digital Literacy and Competences: We examine the evolving nature of digital literacy and competence in the 21st century. We contribute to the development of frameworks for understanding digital skills, assessing digital competence in learners, and designing interventions to promote digital literacy across different educational levels. This includes our effort to bridge the German discussion about Bildung and the international discourse about literacies and competences.

- Research Synthesis: Together with specialists from Leibniz-Centers, we conduct rigorous research syntheses, including systematic reviews and meta-analyses, to provide evidence-based insights into the implications of educational technologies. This work helps to inform educational practice and guide future research in the field of EdTech.

- Research-Practice Partnerships: We actively collaborate with educational organizations through research-practice partnerships, ensuring our findings are relevant, applicable, and impactful in real-world settings. Together, we co-design and implement innovative solutions while investigating their implications for teaching, learning, and society. Concurrently, we advance the methodology of co-construction within these collaborative frameworks.
