Michael Kerres studierte und promovierte an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Psychologie. 1989 wurde er zum Professor an die Fachhochschule Furtwangen im Schwarzwald berufen, um - erstmals in Deutschland - den Studiengang Medieninformatik mit Kollegen aufzubauen. In diesem Rahmen entstand die tele-akademie als zentrale Einrichtung für wissenschaftliche Weiterbildung, die das Internet erstmals für offene Bildungsangebote nutzte. Nach der Habilitation an der Pädagogischen Hochschule Freiburg erhielt Michael Kerres 1998 einen Ruf auf die Professur für Pädagogische Psychologie der Ruhr-Universität Bochum, und 2001 wechselte die Arbeitsgruppe an die Universität Duisburg an den neu eingerichteten Lehrstuhl für Mediendidaktik und Wissensmanagement. Nach Ablehung eines Rufs der Universität Nürnberg-Erlangen auf den Lehrstuhl für Lerninnovation an der psychologischen Fakultät (mit Leitung des Instituts für Lerninnovation) erfolgte ab 2015 der Umzug an den Campus Essen.
Michael Kerres studied and earned his doctorate in psychology at Ruhr University Bochum. In 1989, he was appointed professor at Furtwangen University of Applied Sciences in the Black Forest, where he and his colleagues established Germany’s first degree program in Media Informatics. In this context, the Tele-Akademie was founded as a central institution for continuing academic education, pioneering the use of the Internet for open educational offerings. After completing his post-doctoral qualification (habilitation) at the University of Education Freiburg, Michael Kerres was appointed Professor of Educational Psychology at Ruhr University Bochum in 1998. In 2001, his research group moved to the University of Duisburg to the newly established Chair of Educational Media and Knowledge Management. After declining an offer from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg for the Chair of Learning Innovation at the Faculty of Psychology (including the directorship of the Institute for Learning Innovation), the group relocated to the Essen campus in 2015.
