Swapna Kumar, Professor of Educational Technology at University of Flordia, has agreed to visit the lab at the end of 2015 with a travel grant from UDE. She will give a workshop on instructional design on the 4th and 5th of December and will participate in various seminars and lectures for our master students. .. more information coming soon.
In October 2014, we hosted a workshop on “Social Network Analysis in Educational Research”, where we engaged into discussions with colleagues from across Europe and provided an overview of what type of SNA research we conduct at the Learning Lab. With this post, we would like to provide a little update about our recent activities in this direction. We still employ SNA to analyze learning processes in formal and informal environments, which offers exciting insights in learning as a relational and structural activity.

Hochschulen verfolgen unterschiedliche Ansätze bei der Förderung von E-Learning. Ein zentraler Punkt beim Einsatz und der nachhaltigen Verbreitung ist die Gewinnung von Lehrenden, die bereit und befähigt sind E-Learning in ihren Lehrveranstaltungen einzusetzen. Verschiedene Vorgehensweisen und erprobte Modelle der Kompetenzentwicklung für E-Learning werden in diesem Workshop vorgestellt.
Der E-Learning-Netzwerktag bietet Mitglidern der UDE Gelegenheit, sich über Zwischenergebnisse aus Projekten der E-Learning-Strategie der UDE zu informieren, die E-Learning-Service-Angebote und Tools näher kennenzulernen und einen kollegialen Informations- und Ideenaustausch zu E-Learning zu initiieren.
Bei den Tool Days am Learning Lab in Essen stehen neue digitale Werkzeuge und Technologien für das Lehren und Lernen im Fokus. Sie - als Teilnehmende - können diese ausprobieren und für Ihr Szenario untersuchen. Gemeinsam werden die Anwendungsmöglichkeiten in Bildungskontexten erarbeitet und diskutiert.
Two papers on our research about "social capital in social media" and "collaborative tagging systems" have been accepted at the EARLI 2015 in Limassol, Cyprus. The first one, entitled "Tweeting Teachers – Does Social Capital play a Role in Twitter Conversations among Teachers?", has been written by Martin Rehm, Michael Kerres and Ad Notten (UNU-MERIT).
This research and educational project will design, implement and analyse a Community for Learning for Africa (CoLA). The project is hosted by the United Nations University - Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT). The aim of the project is to help participating actors from Africa and Europe to get and stay connected, collaborate in joint training activities and projects, as well as to openly exchange ideas and thoughts, all in relation to underlying PhD research trajectories.
On Thursday, 12th of February 2015, Prof. Maarten de Laat and Bieke Schreurs - both working at the Open Universiteit Netherland - visited the Learning Lab. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss research on the topic of social network analysis, as well as to identify possibilities for future collaboration.
